45/65R45 is the standard fitment for the CAT 992K and Komatsu WA800 class wheel loader – the production-scale machines that move ore at the digger face on Pilbara iron ore, gold and copper operations. The size is large, heavy, and demanding to manufacture; supply base is narrower than mid-size loader tyres like 26.5R25.
The naming convention reads: section width 45 inches, aspect ratio 65 (section height is 65% of section width), radial construction, 45-inch rim. The tyre is roughly 2.7 metres tall and weighs over 3 tonnes per unit.
Almost all 45/65R45 production runs L-5 specification – extra-deep tread, heat-resistant or cut-resistant compounds. The application is severe enough that L-4 spec wouldn't carry the duty. Compound choice (heat-resistant vs cut-resistant) depends on the cycle – long cycles in hot ambient favour heat-resistant, shorter cycles in abrasive material favour cut-resistant.
Through 2024-25 this size experienced the most acute global supply tightness in the OTR market. Lead times stretched to 25+ weeks for non-contract buyers. The market normalised through 2026 with capacity additions from all major manufacturers, but 45/65R45 remains a size where supply discipline matters.
Caterpillar 992K, 992L · Komatsu WA800-3, WA800-8 · Hitachi ZW550 (some variants) · Letourneau L-1350 (legacy fitment via adapter)
Note: for tier-one mining contracts on primary production fleet, the cost premium for tier-one in 45/65R45 is generally justified by supply continuity, retreadable casing residual value, and the lower downtime risk. Mid-tier earns its place in secondary fleet positions, not at the digger face on the primary 992.
Jewell Tyres trades 45/65R45 across every credible brand. Direct delivery to Pilbara mine sites, Port Hedland, Dampier.
